Scottish Art - painting of Urquhart Castle

war painting

Description:

This oil painting was a commision recently completed for a client.

Urquhart Castle is located on the North side of Loch Ness.

The castle ( in the form we know see ) was started in the early 13th century by Alan Durward, Lord of Atholl, King Alexander 2nd's brother-in law.

In 1296 it was captured by King Edward 1st of England who managed to hold onto it for four years before being ejected. It was re-captured again by the English who were then rejected by Robert the Bruce who secured it for the crown. The next 200 years it was under pressure mainly from The Lord of the Isles who managed to capture it several times but could not hold on to it.

In 1506 it was given to Clan Grant who held it for four hundred years, losing it a couple of times but managing to re-capture it again. Although it has to be mentioned, in 1692 they did blow the castle to pieces to prevent the Jacobites seizing and using it.
