This oil painting is of Castle Campbell is situated north of Dollar
overlooking the Ochil Hills.
Originally called Castle Gloom parliament approved its name change
in 1490. It had originally belonged to the Stewart Clan but was
gifted in marraige.
The walls on the keep are eight foot thick and due to its defensive
position it was nearly impregnable. However the Campbell,
8th Earl of Argyll in 1653 switched his allegiance to Cromwell which
led to the castle being garrisoned by Cromwells troops and the
following year it was torched. The 8th Earl was hung,drawn and
quartered for treason.
