Oil painting of Crail

Scottish artist painting of Crail harbour

Paintings from Scotland - Crail Fife

Crail is situated in the East Neuk of Fife.
Where Fife is sometimes likened to the silhouette of a scottie dog,
on the map, Crail is just below where the nose would be.
By the year 800 it is already recorded that there was a village there.
In the 12th century it was a " thriving town ".
In the year 1310 Crail was given Royal Burgh status with the right to
hold market on a sunday by King Robert the Bruce.
The Parish Church has parts dating back to 1160.
The village has obviously been added from the harbour inland, as needs arose
and the streets are very picturesque as they wind around and up the hill.
The outer harbour breakwater was built in the 16th century and the adjoining
straight part was added by Robert Stevenson in 1826.

There is still a Sunday Market every second sunday on the runway
of the old second world war airfield.
