Portrait Painting of Clansman and their Clan Castle
As a rule I do not get involved in portrait painting. Everyone's children, sweethearts and pets appear differently through their own eyes to how they may arrear to others.
To capture that look I do not feel I have the necessary talent nor time, so rather than risk disappointing I do not accept commissions for such.
However I do enjoy painting Scottish figures in kilts and tartans. I am reasonably well read on Scottish History and enjoy the challenge of composing an historically accurate painting.
I am an great admirer of the Scottish artist Kenneth MacLeay who painted Queen Victoria's staff at Balmoral in 1870. His work has left us an accurate record of the dress and composure of the worthies at that time. Unfortunately there were only about twenty clans represented. I try to paint my figures in a similar style.
My painting, shown above, is the Hunter's castle at Hunterston as it was in the late 1800's and the figure is clad in the Hunter tartan of that time. I would like to think that had Macleay painted my clan it would look similar to this.
Over christmas we had visitors from Germany staying and we delighted in showing them a bit of Scotland. Down from Edinburgh Castle we got them to pose for photo's in kilts and tartans. It was a bit of a giggle, a souvenir. To take that sort of idea up to the next level an oil painting would be grand. We can even correct the dress or cosmetically improve it a bit. A lasting memory.
Just some ideas to consider. Drop us a line if this sort of subject may interest you.
