Dunrobin Castle is situated in the north in Sutherland near Golspie.
I would call it a
Palace more than a Castle, the difference being
when - in
Scotland's growing up period - it was built. Its primary
function
was more to comfort and show than to defence and
blood an
guts.
There had been castles on this site back to the 13th century at
least. During the Jacobite uprisings the Jacobites raided the castle and
the, then 17th Earl of Sutherland escaped and joined forces with the
"Butcher Cumberland" who was in Aberdeen massing forces to depose
Charlie.
In 1845 the majority of the present building was re-modeled by
Sir Charles Barry who was at that time very popular after
having re-modeled the houses of parliament. Imagine with the
communications and challenges of travel in these days, for them
to not only have heard of Barry but to get him up there.
It is the largest dwelling in the north of Britain being
about 60 miles south of John o Groats and having 189
rooms.
