Scottish artist's Castle Painting
Culzean Castle is situated on the south west coast 12 miles south of Ayr and is now owned by the National Trust for Scotland acting as guardian of the nation's heritage.
Culzean Castle was originally a fortified L-shaped tower house.
It had been built by the Kennedy family in the late 1500's.
In 1777 David Kennedy, the 10th Earl of Cassillis contracted the then foremost architect in the country a Robert Adam to change the castle from an old and tired tower house to the grand, romantic and fashionable castle that we know today.
It took 15 years and was finally completed in 1792, co-incidentally the year of Robert Adams
death in London. ( Robert Adam was born in Kirkcaldy - my home town - not to be confused by Adam Smith the famous economist - who was also born in 1723 in Kirkcaldy - near to the school where Thomas Carlyle was to teach ninety years later.
sorry I digress but just had to mention it, you understand. :-)
I am not even going to mention Gordon Brown.
To this day it stands as a memorial to the talent of Adam and the skills of the stone mason's.
The castle stands on a cliff top with a superb commanding view over the sea to the Island of Arran. It is surrounded by 600 acres of beautiful gardens, deer park and woodlands walks.
It is open to the public and also provides accommodation and facilities
for weddings,
conferences and functions, which help in its upkeep.
