Man's inability to live in peace with his fellow man caused him
to erect defences to protect him and his kin. The Scottish countryside
is littered with remaining examples to that folly. From prehistoric hill-forts
to reinforced concrete bunkers built to protect in the second world war.

Due to their locations and size probably the most noticeable are our
Medieval Castles. From around the 12th century to the 18th century these
were appearing in the form we know today as the latest inline defences.

After that period a bit more stability and policing was the norm.
Also with the refinement of artillery cannon and siege
warfare the invulnerable Castle image was waning.

Although Castles continued to be built it was to be more
for their aesthetic properties.
