Scottish oil painting showing Caledonian canal
alongside Ben Nevis

scotland

Here we have an oil painting of the Caledonian Canal near Fort William
with Ben Nevis in the background. A nice highland snow scene.
The Caledonian Canal was opened in 1822
having taken 17 years to build. It joins the east and
west coast through the Great Glen up through Loch Ness and is still
in use today although mainly by pleasure boats there are still the odd
fishing vessels saving a few miles or avoiding bad weather round the cape.

I remember 25 years ago on a tourist boat trip from Inverness down the
Caledonian Canal there were old photographs on the boat of the navvies
trudging up and down the fresh dug out section. They wore lead soled boots
to flatten the earth. ouch!

Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in Britain.
It stands at 4406 feet or 1344metres.

the painting is 16x20 inches (app 40x50 cm)
