Ross Fountain was originally made in France in 1860. It was
bought by a
local merchant ( Ross) and installed here around
1865.
The figures represent the arts, science, poetry and industry.
The background in the painting is Edinburgh Castle which dominates
the
city perched on top of a dormant volcano. The oldest
parts date back to 1100 ad although there is evidence of it
being used as a fort as far back as 400 ad.
Mary Queen of Scots gave birth to the first King of the
United Kingdom here.
