Scotland has some 2,000 castles and fortified dwellings in various states
of repair dating back to medievil times. Around the 12th century
Scottish castles were made from stone prior to that they were made
of wood. Historic Scotland nowadays takes care of most of the
"Scottish nations historic environment" which should ensure they
will be around for some time to come.
Edinburgh Castle is the number 1 Scottish tourist attraction
with over one and a quarter million visits last year.

Eilean Donan is another very popular Scottish Castle not only
for visiting but also for painting and photographing.
